A Bird in the Hand

Flying interaction

UI/UXAccessibility

Inspiration

In an exploration of interaction and duality, we invite the player to embody two characters: a vulnerable baby chick who has fallen from its nest, and themselves, a benevolent human determined to keep it safe. Use intuitive gestures to make the bird walk and teach it to fly. Catch it in your hand, and a nest will appear nearby. The game ends when you return the bird to its nest.

Exploration

We explored many different hand and arm interactions to control the baby bird, iterating towards the most intuitive movements for maximum immersion. To make our experience inclusive we implemented spatial sound effects and cues to tell the player how close they are to the bird; when they have the bird in their hand; and the location of the bird’s nest.

How We Built It?

Developed using Unity and Meta Quest 3, Legacy incorporates various tools for asset creation and interaction prototyping. Team collaboration and open communication were key to integrating mixed reality features for an educational and engaging experience.

Tools used

Interaction SDK: Baby chick controlled with intuitive hand gestures
Scene SDK: Chick is localized on top of a real meshed surface
Depth API: Chick is occluded behind real world objects
Audio SDK: Spatial Audio cues are strategically placed to make the experience accessible
